Geckos Machu Picchu trek days 3 & 4

I have to say, day 3 of the 4 day Machu Picchu trek was the hardest for me.  We woke up very early and my muscles were already aching from day 2.  We walked up and down stairs on day 3 for TWELVE HOURS!!!  I don’t think it wouldn’t have been so bad if I wasn’t so sore from day 2.  On a positive note, we did go through heaps of old Incan ruins, we were told that the people trekking to Machu Picchu would have stopped at these places to cleanse themselves as Machu Picchu was so holy.

Day 4 was Machu Picchu.  We got up at about 3:30am to line up for the gate (they only let trekkers through at 5am).  It’s a real rush for everyone to get there the earliest so that’s why we had to get up so early.  We went through to the Sun Gate and got our first glimpse of Machu Picchu.  It was still quite far away and it looked so small from there… I was starting to feel a little disillusioned.  I had just gone through the most physically demanding thing in my life and Machu Picchu looked so small!  But I was so wrong.  There is no way of seeing the real beauty of it until you’re right in there.

When we walked down from the Sun Gate we started to notice some fresh faced people, people in nice clothes, they looked like they’d showered in the last 4 days… they were even speaking on mobile phones!  It was so peculiar, coming out of the woods smelly and dirty facing these people… People who just had no idea!  I felt so out of place, I almost wanted to run back into the wilderness.  Machu Picchu was swarming with these clean, nice clothes wearing people.  I couldn’t believe it, after all we’d been through we all earned some privacy in this amazing, holy place!

Although, after all that; Machu Picchu was amazing.  It had energy in it, like it had seen so much and had been there since the beginning of time.  I felt honoured to be there.  I am so proud of myself for completing the Inca trail and I think I learnt more doing this then just visiting Machu Picchu.  I’m glad it’s over but I would never take it back.  I would not recommend it to everyone, it’s a hard trek and its best if you’re fairly fit.

I’ll try and say something more about Cuzco in the next few days because I just love this place! Until then, Adios!

Chrissy.
